Commentaire: With costumes and sets sumptuously designed by Christopher Oram, drawing inspiration from its source material as well as Norwegian folklore, the fictional kingdom of Arendelle is brought to stunning, three-dimensional life on stage. In addition, the movie's screenwriter Jennifer Lee has fleshed out the book for the Broadway musical to delve deeper into the torn relationship of the two lead protagonists, sisters Elsa and Anna, whilst the Oscar-winning, husband-and-wife songwriting duo of Robert Lopez and Kristin Anderson-Lopez offer up more than double the amount of songs as those cherished from the animated classic. New additions such as Elsa's anthemic numbers "Dangerous to Dream" and "Monster," as well as Anna's emotionally stirring climax in "True Love," are moving, theatrical alternatives to the infectiously upbeat familiarity of "Love is an Open Door" and "Fixer Upper". And "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" seems to take on a new level of poignancy on stage. Of course, the show-stealing transformation sequence during Elsa's "Let It Go" number at the end of Act I promises the Disney magic Broadway audiences have grown accustomed to over the years and now demand. Kudos to Finn Ross' video design and Jeremy Chernick's special effects, who spectacularly aid the birth of the Snow Queen and her ice palace under the gaze of the mesmerizing aurora borealis. (plus)

Commentaire: Madeline Kahn left the show early in the run after having missed 10 performances in two months. She was replaced by her understudy, Judy Kaye. At the time, it was reported that the role was too vocally demanding for her to perform eight times a week, and that she had proposed having Judy Kaye play matinees.
Hal Prince stated in later interviews that she was having trouble commanding the energy to play physical comedy eight times a week, and his statements suggest that he and possibly the writers tried to persuade her to leave. At least a few critics, having attended critics' previews rather than opening night (when Prince says she was wonderful), did find her performance a bit lackluster.
Between the out-of-town opening and the Broadway opening, the role was made more vocally demanding. It may be that this was done at Kahn's suggestion. It does seem that after the Broadway opening, at some performances she sang lower notes in place of some of the high notes that had been added. (plus)

Commentaire: Après la création à Paris, la pièce fut créée en anglais le 5 octobre 1960 au St. James Theatre avec en vedette Laurence Olivier, jouant Thomas Becket et Anthony Quinn jouant le roi Henry II. La production a été nominée pour cinq Tony et en a gagné quatre, dont celui de la meilleure pièce. La pièce est ensuite transférée au Royale Theatre, puis au Hudson Theatre. On dit souvent que pendant cette série, Quinn et Olivier ont inversé leurs rôles: Quinn a joué Becket et Olivier le roi. C'est faux. En fait, Anthiony Quinn a quitté la série pour aller tourner un film et Laurence Olivier a repris son rôle du roi Henry II.
Selon la biographie de Laurence Olivier signée John Cottrell, Anthony Quinn était consterné et fort énervé quand il a lu les critiques qui disaient qu’Olivier était meilleur que Quinn. Il aurait affirmé qu'il n'aurait jamais quitté la série s'il avait su ce qui allait se passer. Malgré cela, c'est Quinn qui fut nominé pour un Tony Award alors qu'Olivier a été oublié. (plus)

Commentaire: Il est probable que même Richard Rodgers et Oscar Hammerstein II ont été surpris par l’accueil enthousiaste réservé à l’Oklahoma!. Hammerstein était dans une creux de sa carrière avec une série de musicals ratés (Gentlemen Unafraid [1938], Very Warm for May [1939] et Sunny River) et Rodgers composait de la musique pour la première fois sans son collaborateur de longue date, le parolier Lorenz Hart. Et au lieu d’un musical chic en temps de guerre traitant de sujets d’actualité tels que le rationnement, les priorités et les numéros de carnaval sud-américains, ils ont sorti une tranche d’Americana basée sur une pièce presque oubliée du début des années ‘30. De plus, le musical n’avait aucune star dans sa distribution: il n’y avait pas de Merman, de Jolson ou de Cantor, et à la place le musical proposait des interprètes relativement inconnus tels que Alfred Drake, Joan Roberts et Celeste Holm. Et l’intrigue? Légère, réduite à l’essentiel: le premier acte traitait du dilemme de l’héroïne de choisir un garçon pour l’accompagner à un pique-nique. Et le deuxième acte a eu la témérité de tuer l’un des personnages majeurs et, en plus, le tueur est le héros du musical. Mais tous ces éléments se sont unifiés pour le plus grand plaisir du public et Oklahoma! est non seulement devenu le musical ayant la plus longue série de la saison, mais aussi la plus longue de la décennie; et quand Oklahoma! a fermé en 1948, il a était devenu le musical ayant la plus longue série de l’histoire du théâtre américain, un titre qu’il a conservé jusqu’à ce que My Fair Lady (1956) le dépasse en 1961.
